Cotton Yield Estimation

How to Estimate Cotton Yield Using CalculatedAg.com

Accurately estimating cotton yield helps farmers optimize harvest planning, fiber sales, and field management. Use this step-by-step guide to estimate your cotton yield using CalculatedAg.com's cotton yield estimation calculator.

  1. Measure Row Width
Determine your row width in inches. Common row widths include:
    • 30 inches → Standard row spacing
    • 38-40 inches → Traditional wider row spacing
Enter this value in the calculator.

  2. Count the Number of Bolls
Count the total number of bolls within a 10-foot section of the row. Enter this value in the calculator.

  3. Determine Average Boll Weight
Weigh a sample of cotton bolls and calculate the average weight in grams. Typical weights range from 2 to 6 grams per boll. Enter this value in the calculator.

  4. Select Picker Efficiency
Choose the picker efficiency based on expected harvesting effectiveness. Options include:
    • 75% → Lower efficiency (missed bolls, field conditions)
    • 85% → Average efficiency
    • 95% → High efficiency (well-calibrated machinery)
The calculator will apply the appropriate percentage.

  5. Calculate Cotton Yield Estimate
Click the "Calculate Yield Estimate" button. The tool will compute the estimated lint yield per acre using:
((Average Boll Weight x Number of Bolls x Picker Efficiency x Turnout) ÷ (Row Width x 0.008685))
This formula accounts for plant population, fiber production, and expected harvest efficiency.

For the most accurate results: Sample multiple areas of your field and average the data across different locations.
